Advanced Shadow Work

The Mirror Method

A hundred doors into the shadow. Ten areas, ten trigger words in each, and a four card spread written for every word.

What it is

The Mirror Method is a shadow reading framework built on one simple idea. The words a person cannot look at point to what they have not yet faced.

The client does not get a general shadow reading. They choose an area, read its ten words, and pick the one their body reacts to. That word has its own spread. Guilt does not get the spread for shame. Abandoned does not get the spread for rejected. The detail is the method.

The shadow is not a monster. It is a messenger. The word you cannot look at is the name of the message. The Mirror Method

Where it comes from

Jung and the shadow

Carl Jung used the word shadow for the parts of ourselves we do not want to see, and so keep out of awareness. He used the word persona for the face we show the world.

The shadow does not vanish. It shows up in our reactions, our repeating patterns, and what we project onto other people.

"When an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate."Carl Jung, Aion, 1951
Getting the facts right about Jung's stages

Jung described four stages of analytical therapy: confession, elucidation, education and transformation.

The four stages used in this method, recognition, acknowledgement, acceptance and integration, are a teaching model that follows the same direction of travel. They are not a list Jung wrote himself. Teach them as the stages of the Mirror Method, and nobody can catch you out.

The four cards

Fixed across every spread

Each card walks the client one stage further. The plain wording is what the client sees on the client screen.

Listening deeper

The four layers of what the client is asking

A client's first words are rarely the work. Tap each layer to open the next one down.

1. The surface complaint

What the client says when they sit down. My relationship is struggling. I keep putting things off. I am exhausted. This is the weather, not the climate. It is real, but it is not the work.

2. The pattern

What shows when you ask how long this has been going on, or whether it has happened before. This always happens when I get close to someone. I have done this in every job. A pattern is the first clue that the work is not about this situation.

3. The belief

The inner rule the pattern is serving. If I get too close, I will be swallowed. If I succeed, I will be resented. The client rarely says the belief out loud. You hear it by listening for what the pattern protects against.

4. The original wound

The moment the belief was put in place. Often something the client has played down or forgotten. The Mirror Method never asks the client to name this out loud. The trigger word points at it and the spread opens it, without them having to confess it.

You are not here to fix the weather. You are here to help the client notice what the weather has been telling them about the climate.

Two ways to run it

The full session runs for about ninety minutes and follows all seven steps below.

For a shorter reading, open the client screen. It gives the client a short introduction to Jung, a moment to settle, the area and word choice, the spread and a take away, so you can get straight into the cards.

Before you offer this reading

Shadow work at the wrong moment can unsettle someone rather than help them. Read this first.

When not to offer it

Active crisis. Not for anyone with thoughts of suicide, in acute crisis, or with fresh trauma in the last few weeks. Signpost them to the right support.

Recent grief. If they have had a big loss in the last few months, offer something gentler first.

Drifting away. If the client starts to look far away, glassy eyed or disconnected, stop. Ground them. Do not carry on until they are fully back.

Alcohol or substances. Do not read for someone who has had a drink or taken anything before the session.

Already in therapy. If their therapist has asked them to focus on certain work, respect that.

Keep your support numbers to hand

Have the right helplines ready before you start, such as Samaritans and Mind in the UK, and look up the local ones for clients in other countries. You signpost. You do not step outside your lane.

Enter with care, leave with care

Never end on an open wound. Always close with step seven, and make sure the client is grounded and back in the room before they leave.

You are a skilled reader. You are not a therapist, a crisis counsellor or a trauma specialist. Knowing where that line sits is part of the job.

Do your own shadow work first

You cannot take a client somewhere you have not been. Pick a spread in The spreads tab and press Practise this spread myself, or use the prompts below.

Shuffle your own deck and pull one card for each position. Write the card, then read it with your full Clear-Cut visual framework.

No spread chosen yet. Go to The spreads tab and pick a word.
